The following chronicles each A.P.B.A.L. season.

2010-2011

The A.P.B.A.L. changed from a dice league to a BBW computer league and expanded to ten teams. Atlanta won the Wasatch pennant by beating New York in a playoff game.  The L.A. Dodgers went 17-5 to close the season and pass Philadelphia for the final playoff spot in the Wasatch Division. Jon Waldram won his first pennant with Boston, Hugh Brown played his 3000th regular season game, Travis Ewing won his 500th game, and Harley Gold won his 300th.  San Francisco’s Matt Cain (14) threw the first BBW no-hitter.

2009-2010

The league expanded back to seven clubs and the playoffs expanded to include the top four teams.  Philadelphia, picked to finish sixth with two D starting pitchers, jumped off to an incredible start.  The Phils had a 33-13 record (.717) and led by 8 games on July 25, then went into a total collapse, losing 17 of their final 20 contests.  St. Louis overtook them and captured the pennant, then swept their way to the championship.  The Cards Adam Wainwright (BYZ) and Boston's Jon Lester (BY) threw no hitters.  Wainwright's was a 1-0 win over Chicago's Jim Harden, who threw a 1 hitter in the loss.

2008-2009

The A.P.B.A.L. was forced to reduce to a six team league.  Manager Harley Gold stunned the league by taking the Florida Marlins and then trading so that he started a C and three D's with all C's in the bullpen.  Despite being picked to set a new record for losses, the Marlin's offense kept them in games.  Atlanta set the modern record with a .290 team BA and Florida broke the mark for the worst team ERA.  The Braves' Chipper Jones (.337 1-0-0-0-0) set a new RBI record, while Detroit's Placido Polanco (.341 0-0-0) shattered the high's for hits and BA.  The Dodgers' Brad Penny (AX) had an ERA more than 1.00 below the next best pitcher.  Both Jones and the Tigers' Gary Sheffield (.265 1-0-0) hit four homeruns in a single game.

2007-2008

Minnesota, bolstered by trades from the previous season and boasting a team of all .300+ hitters with an A,A,B,B pitching staff, ran away with all the honors despite numerous injuries and suspensions.  Atlanta won the Oquirrh Division in a playoff while posting the lowest W-L percentage ever for a pennant winner.  The Padres’ Chris Young (BX) threw a no hitter against the Braves.  The Twins’ Francisco Liriano (AYZ) finished 12-1 to set a new won-lost winning percentage for a pitcher.  The Yankees also set a new record for runs and RBI in a single game when they destroyed the Mets 31-2.

2006-2007

The A.P.B.A.L. expanded to a three division, nine team league for one season.  The three pennant winners, with the top two teams receiving first round byes, were joined by three wild card teams in the playoffs.  New York defeated Boston in a playoff game for the last wild card spot.  Due to trades, David Ortiz set a league record by appearing in 70 games.  Atlanta began its season at 6-14 and rallied to win 40 games and the Wasatch pennant.  Cleveland started 10-20 and came back to finish with a winning record and a wild card berth.  Los Angeles came from 6 games back on July 25 to edge Houston, and their three starting “A” pitchers, for the Oquirrh pennant.  The Braves scored 10 runs in one inning against St. Louis after there were two out and lost a game 1-0 to a DZ Cleveland pitcher when their starter threw a perfect game for 8 2/3 innings before giving up a homerun.

2005-2006

Barry Bonds (.362 1-1-1-6-6) was traded by Florida to Boston at the All Star Game and a week later the Marlin manager announced he was leaving the league.  The Yankees scored a new team record 25 runs against the White Sox as every starter had a hit, run, and RBI.  Ichiro Suzuki (.372 0-0) had a bunt single then sat out the next two games to become the first player to hit .400.  San Diego set new team records with 409 runs and 171 doubles.  A.J. Mizerak became the first manager to have a 3-1 lead in the Championship Series and lose it, as Boston fell to New York.  The Yankees were the first team to win all three championship playoff contests by a single game.  The league had the most runs scored per team/per game in the modern era.

The "Hudson Rule" was replaced by a rule allowing a batter to get a hit with a 35 and the basis empty if he is hitting from the opposite site of the plate as the pitcher's throwing arm. Frank Eddy retired citing an inability to roll the dice. In his last game his Marlins were 2 hitted by a "C". A new unofficial record was set with 23 trades involving 189 player transactions. Barry Bonds also set a new record for walks received. The Cardinals captured the Oquirrh pennant on the last day of the season when Pedro Martinez (AXY) threw a no hitter (one man got on via an error) while fanning a record tying 17 batters. Three Athletics hit more than 20 HRs and Alex Rodriquez (.298 1-1-0-6) posted the worst stats by a quality selection - .195 with 10 HRs in 64 games.

Boston closed the season with a 26-9 to take the Wasatch Division pennant. Jason Schmidt (BX) of the Giants became the first pitcher in the league's history to throw a perfect game. Boston's Pedro Martinez (AXYZ) threw a no hitter for the second consecutive year. Arizona's Randy Johnson fanned 17 batters in a 10 inning game. The Red Sox set a record with 7 errors in a game and, at one point, San Francisco played 23 consecutive games in the road.

It was the year of Barry Bonds (.328 1-1-1-0-0-0) as the Seattle outfielder shattered the slugging percentage record (.981) that had been held by Willie Mays and the on base percentage record (.542) that had been held by Lou Gehrig. Bonds also set new league records for homeruns, runs scored, walks, and total bases while winning a gold glove and a pennant. N.Y.'s Mike Stanton (A*XZ) also set a new mark by appearing in 49 games in relief. No hitters were thrown by Atlanta's Kevin Millwood (CY), Seattle's Aaron Sele (BZ) and Boston's Pedro Martinez (AXYZ). Millwood lost his in the 10th and Sele was pulled for a pinch runner after 10 innings of no hit ball. Martinez also set a new record with 17 strikeouts for a 9 inning game. Boston's Jermaine Dye (1-5-6) also entered the books by hitting a record tying 4 homeruns in a single game. A Ewing won the Championship Series for the 6th consecutive year as Jackson downed Travis.

Boston set a new record for victories during the season, but then fell to the curse of the Bambino as they were upset by Arizona in the first round of the playoffs. Manager Chris Dillon jumped ship during the season, leaving the Mets and taking over the reigns of the Braves. Manny Ramirez (.299 1-1-0-0-0) had 10 RBI in a single game. The Red Sox duo of Bret Saberhagen (BYZZ) and Pedro Martinez (ACXYZ) went 27-5. Saberhagen tied the record for wins, while Martinez' ERA was more than a full point better than the next best pitcher in the league. Jose Lima (BYZ) won 12 straight games for Houston. Barry Bonds set a new season record with 77 runs scored and passed Willie Mays for lifetime homeruns.

1999-2000

An expanded league witnessed two tremendous pennant races as the Yankees swept the Atros in their final series for the Wasatch pennant and four teams went down to their final series in the Oquirrh Division before Cleveland won their flag on the final day of the season. The Astros shattered all kinds of team offensive records. Colorado won 13 consecutive games to roar back from last place and make a bid for a playoff position. Atlanta lost its manager, and 10 of its final 14 games, to fall from first to fourth. New records included Mark McGwire's 73 walks, Jeff Bagwell's 75 runs scores, and Al Leiter'ss 182 K’s. Greg Maddux set a new lifetime record for wins.

1998-1999

The Yankees made numerous pre-season trades and, as a result, fielded a club that ran away with the Wasatch pennant by a record 14 games. Glendon Rusch (DYZ) tossed a no hitter and Andy Pettitte (AYZ) threw a one hitter as New York swept a double header from the Giants. Randy Johnson (AXY) fanned ten consecutive batters versus Cleveland, had 16 K's in 8 innings against Atlanta, and set a new record with 166 strikeouts for the year. Michael Tucker set a record with 6 runs scored in a single game. After scoring 43 runs in their first 17 contests, Houston scored 47 in their next three.

1997-1998

1997-98 was labeled the "tumultuous season" as three different managers piolted the Yankees before New York righted itself and went on to capture the league championship. In a season that established a new mark for league homeruns, three no hitters were tossed: two by Los Angeles' pitchers Ramon Martinez (BYW) and Ismael Valdes (BYZ) and one by Chicago's Kevin Tapani (CYZ). Texas shattered the league record for total bases and slugging percentage and Baltimore's futility included new lows in won-loss percentage and team batting average (.197). Atlanta went the entire season without a successful sacrifice bunt.

Chicago opened the year with a 16-3 record and closed it at 11-2 (going 8-24 in between) to capture the Oquirrh pennant. The White Sox were aided by Boston's 12 game losing streak to close the season. Cleveland's Mark Guthrie became the first D pitcher to throw a no hitter, downing New York. He also defeated Cincinnati 1-0 in 10 innings. Andre Dawson set new lifetime records for at bats and games played, surpassing Willie Mays, and Roger Clemens moved ahead of Steve Carlton in lifetime strikeouts.

Atlanta lost to Chicago in a playoff for the Wasatch pennant, thwarting the Braves record bid for three consecutive flags. Rebuilding Montreal stunned the league by winning the Oquirrh Division and then coming from 1 game to 3 to win the league championship. New records included Deion Sanders' 9 RBI in a game and Kansas City's 15 consecutive game losing streak to close the season. Scott Sanderson (CYZ) went 12-2 with a 1.66 ERA.

Atlanta fell one short of the league record for most wins for a season as they won the Wasatch Division by ten games. The Braves were led by Tom Glavine (AYZ) who established a new mark with twelve consecutive wins on his way to capturing the Lew Burdette Award. Alejandro Pena tied another record with 19 saves. Atlanta laid claim to being one of the best teams in A.P.B.A.L. history by downing the overachieving Cardinals in seven games for the league championship. St.Louis was led by Milt Thompson, winner of both the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player Awards, and in the top three in seven offensive categories.

The league briefly experimented with a Random Error Distribution Card, but it was discontinued at mid-season. Bob Welch (AZ) threw a 9 inning no hitter before being pulled for a pinch hitter in the 10th. Dave Stewart (AZ) tossed a no hitter. Cincinnati went 17-3 to open the season, but were then involved in an automobile accident. Nevertheless, they coasted into the pennant by playing .500 ball the rest of the way. Oakland defeated Toronto 6-4 in a single game playoff for the Oquirrh Division pennant. Dennis Eckersley (ABXZZ*) set records with 45 relief appearances and 19 saves.

1988-1989

The A.P.B.A. League briefly experimented with a "mystery play" adaptation to the Unusual Play Appendix. Forty year old Darrell Evans (.256 1-1-6) put together a phenomenal year, hitting 27 homeruns and amassing a .768 slugging percentage. Wade Boggs .363 1-4-5-6) suffered through three separate injuries and then checked into a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Center just before the playoffs. Boston, despite posting a 21-11 record at mid-season, was overtaken by the Mets in the Wasatch Division. Red Sox pitchers did fan a record 510 batters, however. Houston set team records with 137 stolen bases and 64 sacrifice bunts.

The Championship Trophy was initiated. The concept of franchise trading was introduced to the A.P.B.A.L. Los Angeles won the Wasatch Division pennant with an unorthodox pitching staff of three grade "C" starters and three grade "A" relievers. Phil Niekro (CY) went 9-1 with a 1.81 ERA for the Dodgers. Tom Neidenfuer (AYZ*) had a record 17 saves and Terry Forster (AYZ*) won 12 games in relief, including 10 in a row. Carlton Fisk (.289 1-5-5-6) hit 4 homeruns in one game. Fernando Valenzuela (BY) and John Denny (AYZ) threw no hitters against Baltimore. Dale Murphy (.302 1-5-5) won the batting title, but the two teams he played with went 26-38 with him in their lineup and 33-31 without him. The Atlanta manager disappeared for two weeks during the season.

The A.P.B.A.L. played its first winter season, opening play in October and running into March of the following year. The Chicago White Sox went 25-7 over the second half of the season to capture the pennant. The Sox also scored 12 runs in one inning during a 16-4 victory over Boston, and committed only 21 errors all year. Billy Pierce (CYZ) won both the M.V.P. and the Lew Burdette Awards and was one of three Chicago pitchers to win 10 or more games. Pittsburgh finished with a record low .292 won-lost percentage, but the Pirates' season did include an 11-10 victory over San Francisco when the Bucs scored 7 times in the bottom of the 9th inning. Manager David Hudson forfeited his last two games of the season to the Chicago Cubs and then, as a result, was ostracized from the league for the next two years.

Reduced to a four team league, the A.P.B.A. League initiated the concept of a "scrub" player draft to fill out the team rosters to 25 players. Bobby Shantz (BYZ) pitched a 15 inning 1-0 shutout. Ryne Duren (AXYW*) struck out 13 batters in 8 2/3 innings of relief. Billy Gardner (.217 0-0) hit a record low .107 for a qualifying batter and Brooklyn defeated Cincinnati 20-10 in a free swinging contest.

The A.P.B.A.L. was re-founded in a fraternity house in Burlington, Vermont with Hugh Brown serving as Commissioner. Players were restricted to performing only at those positions indicated on their cards. Teams were selected from the 1959 American League player cards. Milwaukee, losers of 33 of their first 44 contests, won 18 of their final 20 games, including 14 in a row. At the same time Cleveland lost 12 consecutive games, but the Barons still managed to hold on to the third place playoff position. Al Kaline won the M.V.P. Award despite failing to receive a single first place vote.

1962

The league went underground, playing its games in the Friends' Academy gym, as several mothers felt APBA was detracting from their sons' academic pursuits. Mung Waldees introduced the concept of the "pinch roller". The season was aborted after 52 games when an arsonist destroyed most of the teams. The Pirates had been leading the league (33-19 .635) and Vernon Law (BZ) had won 12 consecutive games, but all the official records were destroyed by the fire.

1961

Given the option, Pittsburgh chose to use Fred Allen Green (BY* .375 1-1-1-1) as an outfielder, rather than a pitcher. Green responded by belting a record 35 homeruns, but, shades of Ralph Kiner, the Pirates still finished out of the playoffs. Los Angeles walked Hank Aaron intentionally all 5 times he came to bat as the Braves left 17 men on base in losing to Larry Sherry (BX) 1-0. Brooklyn was shutout for 39 consecutive innings.

1960

Hardin Davis, Hugh Brown and Peter Suda founded the A.P.B.A. League in New York. The basic game rules were adopted and additional rest requirements for pitchers established. All the teams were selected from the 1959 National League. Games were played during overnight weekend sessions. H.K. "Trader" Davis sent Jim Pendleton (.257 0-0) to Brooklyn for Larry Sherry (BX). The Cincinnati skipper also began using a pitcher, Bennie Daniels (DY .310 1-2-6-6), in his outfield during the second half of the season. Led by Daniels and Johnny Temple (.311 0-0-0), who hit .381 with 27 extra base hits in his final 35 games, the Reds won 8 of their last 10 games before losing a playoff game to the Giants for the third place playoff spot. Brooklyn, led by Lew Burdette (BZ) - 12-3 2.37 ERA, won the league's first pennant and championship. Cincinnati hurlers posted a record 41 complete games.
